Balding Q & A

What is balding?

Balding happens when you lose natural hair from your scalp. Most often, it occurs due to genetics, but it can also happen as the result of a disease, medication, or stress.

Before you’re fully bald, you might notice some hair loss resulting in thinning areas or patches. Or, you might notice that your hairline is receding. In men, a receding hairline is a sign of androgenetic alopecia, which is also called male-pattern baldness. Female-pattern baldness can happen to women, but it usually starts with a widening hair part.

Regardless of your age when you start losing hair, balding can have an impact on your self-confidence. Fortunately, there are options for treatment when it comes to hair loss. At Honest Hair Restoration, Dr. Maag teams with you as you explore your treatment options.

What causes balding?

Beyond genetic male- or female-pattern baldness, balding can have other causes. If you’re losing your hair and aren’t sure why, Dr. Maag considers your medical history, habits, medications, and other possible factors. He can help you figure out why you’re balding unexpectedly.

Some of the most common causes of balding are:

  • Too little protein in your diet
  • Frequent tight hairstyles (e.g. cornrows)
  • Cancer treatment
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Nutrient deficiencies
  • Alopecia areata, which is an immune disease
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Ringworm of the scalp
  • Extreme stress
  • Certain medications
  • Habitual hair pulling

You can’t always prevent balding, especially if it is genetic. However, making sure you eat a balanced diet and limiting heat damage and traction on your hair can slow down or prevent some forms of hair loss.

Can I regrow my hair if I’m balding?

There are several options for hair replacement and even a few that help you grow your own natural hair back. If you’re balding, Dr. Maag discusses your options during your consultation at Honest Hair Restoration. Available treatments include:

  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) scalp injections
  • Follicular unit extraction (FUE)
  • NeoGraft® assisted ProGrowth combination FUE and hair transplantation
  • Low-level laser therapy
  • Prescription oral medications
  • Exosomal hair restoration

Keep in mind that you might need to try one or more of these options before you find one that works for your hair regrowth.

Some options, like laser therapy and PRP injections, aid hair growth by stimulating the follicles that are no longer growing hair.

Others, like FUE and hair transplantation, involve moving healthy follicles from your scalp into areas where hair is not growing. To get a hair transplant, you must have some healthy follicles that Dr. Maag can harvest.
